On May 31, 2014, the Kalamazoo community will come together in a prominent location in Kalamazoo to celebrate Kalamazoo Creativity and Community. At that time, Together Kalamazoo, a monumental work of art produced by two diverse teams of middle schoolers from across Kalamazoo, will be unveiled. Western Michigan University’s Lewis Walker Institute, in collaboration with BIGthink, invite you to complete an application to become one of the 80 youths who will be selected to participate in the creation of Together Kalamazoo. If selected, you must commit to participating in one of two Creativity Teams.

Each creativity team will be composed of 40 participants. Both creativity teams will meet twice on Saturday afternoons in the gymnasium of St. Joseph Parish, located at 930 Lake Street, Kalamazoo, and then come together again for the final celebration and unveiling of Together Kalamazoo on May 31.

Creativity Team A Workshops will meet on March 8 and March 22.

Creativity Team B Workshops will meet on March 15 and March 29.

Each of the Saturday workshops will begin at 12:45 pm and end at 4 pm. (please wear comfortable casual clothing)

During the Saturday workshops, participants will both work independently and in teams with artists and educators to develop and demonstrate their creativity, positive sense of self and appreciation of community. Visual art works will be collected at the end of the workshops to be used to build a large-scale sculpture to be installed with other community arts in a Grand Finale celebration in Bronson Park.

All workshops will be directed by and supervised by at least 15 adults, including artists and educators from BIGthink, as well as educators and students from Western Michigan University. All educators from BIGthink are experienced state-certified teachers, as well as specialists in integrated learning and whole brain teaching.

Seats are limited, please reserve your child’s opportunity as soon as possible.
